The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) today announced that it has been awarded the 2025 ASBI Bridge Award of Excellence by the American Segmental Bridge Institute (ASBI) for the design and construction of the Airport Guideway and Stations (also known as Segment 2) portion of the rail system. The Bridge Award of Excellence recognizes the owners of bridges which exemplify concrete segmental bridge design and construction excellence.
“I am so honored that HART has been recognized for the engineer feats that were achieved in the design and construction of the Airport Guideway and Stations segment,” said HART Executive Director and CEO Lori Kahikina. “This portion of the alignment features the highest section of guideway that was required to clear the tallest airplane tail near Terminal 1 at the airport. Travelling west to east, the guideway then traverses what’s come to be known as the S-curve, which is a series of turns needed to navigate a challenging and congested path to the Airport station. On the way to the Lagoon Drive station, riders then experience the lowest point of Segment 2, designed this way to accommodate the flight path. Segment 2 also features what is believed to be the world’s deepest cast-in-place concrete column at 357 feet, which is part of the support structure for the Middle Street station.”
The award was presented to HART at the ASBI Convention on October 27, 2025 in Bellevue, Washington. HART Deputy Project Director Matthew Scanlon attended the award ceremony and graciously accepted the award on behalf of HART.
The award criteria include innovation of design and/or construction, rapid construction, aesthetics and/or harmony with the environment, cost competitiveness, and minimization of construction impact on the traveling public. ASBI is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum where owners, designers, constructors, and suppliers can meet to further refine procedures and evolve new techniques that will advance the quality and use of concrete segmental bridges.
