Taking a Pie in the Face for Food Security

“Where else can you work that you have the opportunity to smash a pie in the face of the CEO and COO for a worthy cause AND help build something incredible that will transform the entire community!!”

The City, State, and Hawai‘i Foodbank have partnered again for the annual Hawai‘i Foodbank Food Drive. HART and our consultants are proud to participate in the drive, with a collective goal of raising 515,000 meals in total between all agencies.

Many local families continue to face economic challenges, where buying food is a struggle. According to the Hawai‘i Foodbank, one in three households in Hawaiʻi struggle with hunger, impacting 90,000 children, and children in 9% of households skip meals due to lack of food insecurity.

Our HART ‘Ohana was eager to help this cause, and brought some fun competition along the way. We held two fundraisers:
1. Monetary and food donations made directly to the Hawai‘i Foodbank
2. A “Pie in the Face” event

In the pie event, staff voted through monetary donations for three “winners” to be “pie’d” and also bid for the chance to be the pie thrower. Our brave “winners” were Lori M.K. Kahikina, P.E., ED and CEO, Rick Keene, DED and COO, and Brooks Ford, Deputy Director, Project Controls. Up until the final seconds before the winners were “pie’d,” staff continued bidding to throw a second one, do the “sandwich method” of smashing a pie in the face and one at the back of the head, and pulling playful surprises, including a switch-up where Brooks was pied by Lori, then a secret thrower nominated Brooks to launch a pie at Lori. This was a terrific event with a lot of laughter, last words before being “pie’d,” and some tasty banana cream pies (according to the winners)!

Let’s help our community achieve food security. If you would like to support the initiative by donating:
