The Honolulu Rail Transit Project is being built in three operating segments:
SKYLINE SEGMENTS 1 & 2 (East Kapolei to Kalihi Transit Center) //
Skyline Segments 1 and 2 are now open, providing service from East Kapolei to Kalihi Transit Center.
Skyline is an automated, driverless rail system operating along approximately 15 miles of elevated guideway, with the exception of a 0.6-mile at-grade section at Hālaulani (Leeward Community College) Station. The system includes 13 stations, 20 four-car trains, and a Rail Operations Center.
Skyline is powered by an electric third-rail system. The City’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) operates and maintains Skyline, including TheBus and paratransit services. The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) is responsible for design and construction.
SEGMENT 3 (Kalihi Transit Center to Civic Center) //
Utility Relocations (ongoing)
Utility relocation work along Dillingham Boulevard is ongoing, along with roadway improvements such as widening and paving. This work is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2026.
Guideway and Station Construction
The August 2025 groundbreaking marked the start for the City Center Guideway and Stations (CCGS) phase. This segment includes the design and construction of approximately three miles of elevated guideway and six stations: Mokauea (Kalihi), Niuhelewai (Honolulu Community College), Kūwili (Iwilei), Hōlau (Chinatown), Kuloloia (Downtown), and Kaʻākaukukui (Civic Center).
Construction of guideway foundations began in late 2025, with drilling operations underway in Iwilei along Kaʻaahi Street and in Downtown Honolulu along Nimitz Highway. As work progresses, columns and other above-ground structures will continue to take shape along the corridor.
Project Timeline
Segment 3 is currently scheduled to be ready for passenger service in 2031.
