HART Completes the First Guideway Column of Segment 3

Segment 3 first column on Nimitz Highway

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) announced the successful completion of Pier 732, the first guideway column of Skyline’s Segment 3, which stretches from Middle Street to Civic Center Station in Kakaako.

“The completion of Pier 732, the first of 148 columns in Segment 3, represents a significant accomplishment for the entire HART Ohana, and our contractor, Tutor Perini, and is symbolic of all the collaboration and hard work it’s taken to get to this point,” said HART Executive Director and CEO Lori Kahikina. “Over the coming months, the public will start to see more columns in the Downtown and Iwilei areas, and eventually, by the middle of next year, sections of elevated guideway. We’re very pleased with the progress the project team is making and will continue to push as we enter this next phase of construction.”

Pier 732 is located near the intersection of Nimitz Highway and Fort Street in Downtown Honolulu and is supported by an underground shaft that reaches a depth of over 100 feet. The column measures eight feet in diameter and required approximately 300–400 cubic yards of concrete to construct (equivalent to roughly 30–40 truckloads). Once the guideway structure is complete, it will stand at a height of approximately 43 feet along Nimitz Highway. The guideway height will vary along the alignment.

As noted, this is the first of 148 columns that will be installed to support the guideway along Segment 3. To date, 17 column foundations have been completed, with the next vertical column scheduled to be completed in April. In addition, early stage construction and foundation work at the Chinatown Station, located at Nimitz Highway and Kekaulike Street, will also begin in April 2026.

Construction of the guideway and stations is scheduled to be complete in 2030, with Segment 3 anticipated to open for passenger service by summer 2031.
